Allow me to get cliche and obnoxious and pretentious and shitty in celebration of Star Wars’ 35th anniversary today.
I am currently back in my hometown to visit my parents for Memorial Day Weekend after moving out of state for college 5 years ago. I’ve kept in touch with less than a handful of my high school peers over the past few years and tend to avoid the local scene whenever I find myself back home, for whatever reason (fear of ex-girlfriends, Degrassi marathons on TV, etc.). However, I ran into an old friend this afternoon and he asked me to join him at a popular bar in town this evening. My curiosity got the best of me and I agreed to join him on the condition that I would definitely end up getting super drunk and totally stoned (I totally did). I showed up tonight and saw many of my former classmates who had never left the 3.9 square miles that create my hometown and talking to them about it bummed me out in a big way. A good number of these people had made fun of me in my youth for being a “nerd” (that is, until I became a “jock”). But if one there’s one thing A New Hope taught me as a child, it’s that there exists a more exciting world beyond the farm. And for that lesson, I am eternally grateful.
For those of you who remember my Star Wars collection, you may be surprised to know I’ve never owned a vintage Kenner MOC figure. That is until everyone’s favorite blogger, ratherchildish, hooked me up with this fly Ree-Yees piece.
“Youth is like having a big plate of candy. Sentimentalists think they want to be in the pure, simple state they were in before they ate the candy. They don’t. They just want the fun of eating it all over again. The matron doesn’t want to repeat her girlhood, she wants to repeat her honeymoon. I don’t want to repeat my innocence. I want the pleasure of losing it again.”
